How some individuals abuse the availability of sick pay

 

This article explains how some people take advantage of sick pay at work. I will give a few instances of this that I have encountered in the past few years as examples. Many people have jobs where they are not compensated if they miss work due to illness. Hearing about the privileged employees abusing the system by getting paid when they are ill must irritate these people a great deal. Recently, a buddy of mine informed me about a woman who he works with. When she should be at home in bed, she occasionally shows up to work with a pretty nasty cold or cough.

Of course, she runs the risk of spreading her germs to others by going to work. She would be questioned about her decision to report to work when she should have stayed in bed. When asked why she would say that she did not want to waste her sick days. It wouldn't be enjoyable at home, so she might as well go to work and get sick there. She used the sick days she was entitled to as additional vacation time. While she really called in sick, the managers who were unaware of her attitude assumed she must be seriously ill when in reality she would be perfectly healthy.

In one of the company's buildings, about 15% of the full-time employees were on long-term sick leave. The corporation subsequently made the announcement that it will close down that specific building and lay off all of its employees. The office would stay open for the following six months, but only those who worked 90% of that time would be eligible for full redundancy benefits. Astonishingly many folks experienced instant relief from sadness and back pain; many referred to it as a miracle.
